Upon the announcement that the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg would be awarded the title of European Green Capital 2011, the newly established association “Internationaler Umweltrechtstag Hamburg e.V.” (IURT e.V.) organized the first Hamburg International Environmental Law Conference (HIELC) that took place in September 2011. It was deemed a great success and continued by three following conferences in 2013, 2016 and 2019.
