On the second Hamburg International Environmental Law Conference (HIELC 2013), Professor Rosemary Rayfuse (University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia), a leading expert on international fisheries law, is going to give a speech on Regional Fisheries Management Organisations and their efforts and measures to regulate fishing activities.
Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) play an important role in international fisheries law: some focus on a certain species of fish, others fulfil their mandate to care for living species in an oceanic region. They are being formed by adjacent coastal states or countries with fishing interest in the region. While some RFMOs have only advisory tasks, others play a more important role and have a mandate to set catch limitations and/or technical rules as well as they have control powers.
